Change SGD 50–100 at Changi for arrival costs, then change the rest at an authorized money changer in Bali.

How to Withdraw Cash Safely in Bali

Pick a bank ATM
Use BCA, Mandiri, BNI or CIMB Niaga machines, ideally inside a branch or at a busy Circle K or Indomaret.

Check the machine
Look for loose devices on the card slot and keypad, and cover the keypad as you enter your PIN.

Know the limit
Machines with IDR 50,000 notes often cap at IDR 1,250,000. Those with IDR 100,000 notes allow IDR 2,500,000–3,000,000.

Withdraw less often
Singapore banks charge about SGD 5–7 per overseas withdrawal plus FX fees, so make fewer, larger withdrawals.

Wait for your card
Indonesian ATMs often give the cash first and the card after. Do not walk away without it.

Should I bring USD or SGD to exchange in Bali?
Bring SGD. Converting SGD straight to IDR avoids a double conversion through USD and its second exchange margin.
Should I pay in SGD or IDR by card?
Always choose IDR. Paying in SGD triggers the merchant terminal's poorer rate, and picking IDR can save 3–5% on every purchase.
Do Bali shops add a credit card surcharge?
Often, yes. Many businesses add 2–3% for card payments and usually say so first. Your Singapore bank may also add 2.5–3.5% in foreign transaction fees.
Can I use PayNow or GrabPay in Bali?
Not widely yet. Use Gojek (GoPay) or Grab instead: link your card to pay for rides, food delivery and some QR payments.
How much cash should I carry each day?
About IDR 500,000–1,000,000 (SGD 42–84) in mixed notes covers meals, transport and small buys. Leave the rest in your hotel safe.
Is tipping expected in Bali?
Not required. Many hotels and restaurants add a 10–15% service charge. IDR 10,000–20,000 for a driver or rounding up at a cafe is welcome.
